A New Year and New Beginnings
MESSAGE FROM NACFM PRESIDENT TORY KORTHUIS

As we step into the calendar of a new year, let us take a moment to recognize the sacred in the ordinary, the divine in the daily tasks that occupy our hands. In the echoes of hammers and the hum of our HVAC systems, we can all hear the heartbeat of our buildings.

January, a month of fresh beginnings, calls us to approach our maintenance work with a spirit of dedication and gratitude. Remember, each repair is not just fixing what is broken, but a participation in the ongoing renewal of God’s world.

Reflect on the words from Colossians 3:23 - “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”

As facilities managers, our labor is a form of worship, a service to the One who is intimately invested in what happens in each of our facilities.

Let this month be a journey of mindfulness where each wrench turn, and every diligent effort becomes a prayer. May our hands be guided by the wisdom of the Creator and may the work we do reflect the love that continually sustains us. I have a small sign on my desk that states, “Every job is a self-portrait of the person who did it. Autograph your work with excellence." Reading this reminds me to always strive for excellence with my projects and in my relationships with others.

In the routine tasks of maintenance, discover the extraordinary. In the steady pulse of your daily work, find a connection to the eternal. As we maintain the physical spaces around us, let us also cultivate the spiritual spaces within, drawing closer to the divine presence that accompanies us through every season.

I hope that January will unfold as a time to imagine what might come and think about what we might accomplish. Every day, cultivate God's strength and wisdom within your team and yourself.
