We Stand as Equals.
MESSAGE FROM NACFM PRESIDENT TORY KORTHUIS
In my discussions with NACFM members, I'm struck by the recurring theme of facilities managers grappling with feelings of underappreciation within their professional groups. Many express frustrations at the lack of recognition for their contributions, often feeling overshadowed or marginalized by their colleagues and superiors. Conversely, there are also instances where certain managers exhibit a sense of entitlement, refusing to engage in tasks they perceive as beneath their role or status. As I listen to these stories unfold, I’m reminded of the powerful biblical teaching in John 13:5-17 when Jesus humbly washes the feet of his disciples, a profound act of humility and service, where the highest power stoops down to perform a task typically associated with the lowest of roles.
This imagery evokes a sense of humility and empathy, prompting me to reflect on the inherent dignity and worth of every individual, regardless of their position or perceived importance. It reinforces the belief that true leadership is rooted in humility, compassion, and a willingness to serve others selflessly. In this complex position of human interactions, the vision of God washing feet serves as a timeless symbol of inclusion, grace, and the universal invitation to embrace our shared love for one another. I have a few Bible verses that have been shown to me, and I have listed them below. I hope you find them as powerful as I have. - “In humility, consider others more significant than yourselves.” - Philippians 2:3
- In our journey, let humility guide our steps, for "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." - James 4:6
- May we embrace the spirit of unity, understanding that "there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." - Galatians 3:28
- Let love be our guiding light, for "Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor." - Romans 12:10
- In moments of pride, recall the wisdom found in Proverbs 16:18: "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall."
- May our hearts be filled with compassion, echoing the words of Colossians 3:12: "Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience."
- In humility, let us reflect the character of our Savior, who declared, "Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart." - Matthew 11:29
As a facilities manager, we have the privilege of collaborating with various department heads during meetings. However, the distribution of tasks in these meetings can sometimes lead to feelings of resentment and judgment if we perceive ourselves as shouldering all the "menial" tasks.
It is easy to judge others, but rather than judge, it is more important to reflect on our own attitudes. Let's treat others as we would like to be treated. Let's be eager to tackle tasks that need to be done, regardless of whether they are explicitly in our job description. Let's strive to exemplify Christlike behavior, living lives that others can emulate.
Despite our diverse roles, we are all integral parts of the same team, serving in God's house. We should be willing to lend a hand with any task, embracing a servant's heart mentality.
Let’s lead by example, knowing that we are all equal in God’s eyes.
Blessings to you all, Tory Korthuis, CCFM NACFM President

The Why Behind the What: Facility Management
Facility stewardship/management is a task. A role. It is something we do. Something we manage/steward. Something we hire people to perform. It is what we do. But I am afraid I may not have made a good enough case as to why we do it. Have you ever been asked, “What do you do?” Me too.
