Gratitude: A Heart Full of Thanksgiving
MESSAGE FROM NACFM PRESIDENT TORY KORTHUIS
1 Thessalonians 5:18 – Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ.
We are entering one of my favorite seasons. I enjoy deep frying a turkey and smoking a prime rib for my family each year. Yes, yes, it may take two days to prep and get it ready for the table but it’s worth it. Before you think that I am a master chef, I must confess that my family has had to endure some bad Thanksgiving dinners in the past. I have imploded, yes, IMPLODED a turkey in the smoker and to this day my sister-in-law will get me something from the movie Christmas Vacation to remind me of that memorable event. Let me know if you figure out how I did this; I'm wondering the same thing.
Though I may joke around about a few of our family dinners, Thanksgiving causes me to pause and reflect on the importance of gratitude in our lives as Christians. Thanksgiving is not only a holiday but a beautiful reminder of the abundance of blessings we have received from our Father above. Heartfelt appreciation is our way of expressing gratitude for the Lord's grace, provisions, and, of course, his love for us.
In the craziness of our lives, both personal and professional, it is easy to find ourselves forgetting about all the blessings that surround us. In addition to being thankful for my son starting college this year, my daughters, my wife's job, new friends coming over for dinner, and the opportunity to serve God in his home, I have so many other things to be grateful for. God’s word encourages us to give thanks in all circumstances. We are not required to follow this command IF our lives are free of trouble or trials (as if this ever happens!), but it reminds us to be grateful no matter what we are going through.
Take a moment to focus, reflect and realize that gratitude shifts our perspective. It turns our focus from what is missing or lacking to what is present. By recognizing even the smallest blessings, we become more grateful.
As it states in James 1:17, the act of giving thanks also cultivates a humble heart within us. All good and perfect gifts come from God.
As we gather with our loved ones this Thanksgiving, let us make a conscious effort to express our gratitude to God. May our prayers be filled with Thanksgiving for our Father and his faithfulness, and the gift of his son, Jesus Christ. Moreover, this gift is not just for one day, but for every day.
I will leave you all with this. Everyone with the NACFM is grateful for each one of you. You all are family and I’m blessed to have you as a part of our extended family!! Wishing you a blessed Thanksgiving!
God Bless,
Tory Korthuis
